An Interview with Jett, Local Chicken Farmer
How old were you when you decided to become a chicken farmer?
I was 5 years old.
What made you want to start looking after chickens and collecting eggs?
Because I love chickens, I like eating eggs and I really want to save lots of money to buy a house when I’m older.
What is your favourite thing about being a chicken farmer?
Collecting my eggs every day and saving lots of money when I sell my eggs.
Do you have a favourite chicken?
My favourite chicken is a Brahma or an Olive Egger.
How do you choose the names for your chickens?
I like to pick names for my chickens by their colours or if they do something funny. For example, I have a rooster whose name is Rocky because he is the same colours as the Sydney Roosters, and I have a cream Legbar hen, whose name is Percie, because she likes to perch a lot.
Do you think your chickens have personalities? Who is the silliest one?
Yes, I think chickens have personalities and they are so funny sometimes. My silliest chicken would have to be one of my Olive Egger hens, Olivia. She is crazy and runs so fast. She could play for the NRL, she side steps that good! I laugh at her all the time.
What’s the funniest thing your chickens have ever done?
When my hen Creamy went for a ride on my cow’s back! She used to fly on her back all the time when she was little and stay there while she walked around. It was so funny.
What’s the most important thing you’ve learned from taking care of chickens?
That they always need fresh food and water, just like humans. They also need to always have a clean space to sleep in or they can get really sick.
Are you interested in other types of farming?
I love cows and cattle farming too.
What’s the hardest part about looking after chickens?
Carrying the big heavy bags of feed and the big water drums when they are full.
What’s your dream for your farm in the future?
I want to have so many chickens that I have enough eggs to sell to supermarkets.
If you could give advice to another kid who wanted to start farming, what would you tell them?
Make sure you save lots of money to look after your farm and do lots of research on how to look after animals, and make sure you have boots and a raincoat, so you can still look after them when it rains. Also, make sure your Mum and Dad will help you because it’s really hard for kids to do by themself, especially when you have to go to school. But mostly that it’s fun!
